Mom Won’t Let me Do This Again Until I’m 29

We are at a beach town in Thailand, with beaches and cliffs that are as beautiful as they are pristine. But instead of just enjoying the beach, I did something that I never did before; I went rock climbing. I liked it so much, I did it twice. I really liked it because it’s a good physical challenge. climbed on this cliff overlooking the ocean, and it could tower over the tallest tsunami, could dwarf the Burj Khalifa, nay EVEREST!!!The tallest climb that I did was about 90 feet, and another that was 80, but most of them at least 60 feet. The first couple ones were easy, lots of good handholds, but then my guide Sarut started giving me more difficult ones. There was one that I really liked, with a giant stalactite that I climbed around, and then I climbed up into an area with a couple bushes growing on the side of the cliff. There was another where I climbed over an overhang, and then one with handholds just big enough for my fingertips.

The one that was 80 feet tall was much harder than the 90-foot one. It was my fifth climb of the day and halfway up, exhaustion set in. I got so tired, I could barely hold on any longer, and told my belayer, Sarut, that I wanted to give up. He asked me if I was sure, and then I said no. He gave me a boost by pulling the rope, and it helped me get to a place with better handholds. About ten feet from the top, I felt like I was going to be , and again told him that I wanted to give up. He asked if I was sure, and again I told him no. He gave me another tug, and then I started climbing again until I reached the top. The view was breathtaking, although I couldn’t look down, out of fear of my glasses falling, or me seeing how high up I actually was!

Rawr!

We are staying in the old part of Chiang Mai, an old walled in city, in a hotel room. It has a lot of temples, and I like it. But this one morning, I was very excited when I woke up , because we were going to Tiger Kingdom! Tiger Kingdom is a place where you go in the tiger’s cage, and take pictures and pet them. We got ready for the day and went outside our hotel to get a tuk- tuk, ( A tuk-tuk is a little red motorbike, but with a covering over it and a bench in the back.) And it took us to Tiger kingdom. The drive there was very cool, and I saw some chickens in an upside down woven basket. It felt very classic Thailand, because we also passed some markets, and there were houses on stilts.

When we arrived at tiger kingdom we had to figure out what cages we wanted to go into. We got to go in each cage for ten minutes and for some reason they insisted that Xander and I went in together, which was a bit disappointing because I had hoped I would get to have some alone time with the tiger. They also wouldn’t let us do the big tiger or the giant tiger ( I suspect it had to do with the staff thinking the tigers would eat us..) So Xander and I chose a package deal where we got to see the medium tiger and the small white tiger.

We went into the medium tiger’s cage first, which wasn’t really a cage, more like an enclosure with trees, a small concrete pool, and some shrubs. I let Xander pet the tiger for about three minutes while I watched. We had hired a photographer for this cage, so I didn’t have to take pictures of him. The tigers seemed a bit bored and sleepy, and I was so excited to pet them I didn’t feel unsafe. I pet the tiger, and it’s fur was a bit rough. It was cute and it seemed so sleepy I just wanted to squeeze it. We saw the tiger do tricks in the water, because a man was rattling a box with something in it over the water. We also posed with it on a table.

Soon enough our time was up, and we said goodbye to the medium tigers. We went into the cage with the small white tigers, and they were so cute! They were like bigger cats, and one of them was lying in the sun and I got to pet its fur and lie on it. In this one we had to take pictures of each other, but Xander got some really good photos. It was pretty much the same as the medium cage, just with different tigers. The tigers were so cute, and to remember our time there, Xander and I each got little tiger plushies, he got a normal tiger and I got a white one. Our tuk tuk driver had been waiting for us, and we got home quickly, with Xander and I squeezing our plushies tightly.

Our Day to Day Life in Australia

For our second leg of the trip, we went to Australia for about two months. We lived in Waverton, in North Sydney, and I loved it there. It definitely wasn’t as adventurous Costa Rica, because we didn’t travel as much and didn’t do as many adventures. Also, we spoke the language and it was clean. In Australia, it was a lot about day-to-day life and schoolwork.

We lived with a woman named Beth, mum’s friend from college. Beth lived with us in Costa Rica for a month, so we knew her pretty well. She had a one-room apartment, so my brother and I slept on a spare mattress and on the couch. Beth’s apartment was so close to the train, all you had to do was cross street. We also lived very close to the Sydney Opera house, which was only four stops on the train away! There was no big supermarket near Beth’s apartment, so we ordered food off a website called Woolworths. Once or twice a week, a man would come by with the food we ordered and bring it right into our apartment. All the food was very fresh and tasty. The apartment building also had a pool and Xander and I used Beth’s spoons as dive toys.

On a typical day, I would wake up around 7:30, courtesy of mum, and make some breakfast. Because we had so much fresh fruit from Woolworths, we tried to eat healthy. We would eat, get dressed, and then I would brush my teeth and get ready to work for the day. We loved our neighborhood library, which was about a 20-minute walk away and had an outdoor café when we wanted a break. It had amazing free WiFi, and it was easy to talk to our teachers there because there were lots of private spaces. I would normally get a drink at the cafe in the library, and then work for two or three hours. We didn’t always go to the local library, though. Sometimes we would take the metro and be at the stop nearest the big State Library in about 10 minutes. On the way to the state library there was a cute little store called Daiso, which was a discount store filled with a ton of adorable items imported from Japan. The reason the State Library is so cool was because it has a room where you have to be quiet that had stained glass windows and two stories of books surrounding the tables that people were working at. We sometimes also worked at little local cafes a couple of times, there was one right next to our apartment building that was an outdoor café with multiple levels.

Out of all the places, our favorite was the local library. We walked there together every morning and then Xander and I would usually walk back to Beth’s apartment alone. It was really cool, because in Hookset we can’t walk places without an adult. When we would get home, we would relax for the rest of the day or go swimming in Beth’s pool. About once a week, we would do a little adventure and cut the library short. One time we went to a museum exhibit where you got to create your own Star Wars character, and it taught you about all the things that influence the shape of your life. We also went to a indoor water park a couple of times, where there was a lazy river that was titled “River Rapids” and was very fast, very rough, and very fun.

Maybe the biggest part of our Australian life was Anika. Anika is Beth’s three-year-old goddaughter. Every Friday, Beth would pick her up from her preschool at noon and bring her back to the house. Xander and I would spend the rest of the day playing with her and babysitting her. She is very adorable, and we got very close to her. Almost every week, Anika would do these three things: watch Madagascar 3, go swimming, and build a fort. She called it a “fork” and, really, Xander would build it. We didn’t just see her on Fridays, though. We celebrated Thanksgiving with Anika and her moms, watched Anika’s school performance, made chocolate chip pancakes, and went to Luna Park, an amusement park right by the Harbor Bridge. We can’t wait to see her again!

Hobbiton

New Zealand was my favorite part of the trip so far and my favorite part of New Zealand was Hobbiton.

Hobbiton is the place where the hobbits live in the Lord Of The Rings, and it is not just a normal set. They have it located in the middle of a huge sheep farm, and all of the hobbit holes have been preserved. The 40-odd hobbit holes are all on one hill, with the topmost one being Bilbo’s house.

We took a tour of the village, and I really liked how each of the houses was decorated to represent a different job. Like one house might have a pottery wheel, with vases and pots scattered around, or another might have a fishing pole and a bucket.

As we looked around, we noticed that some hobbit holes are smaller than others. The tour guide explained that when they were filming, they needed the hobbits to look tiny, so they had some houses that where big, and the needed Gandalf to look tall, so they had some houses that were smaller than a person.

After we poked around Hobbiton for a while we went into the “town” to get to the inn where we were going to have a banquet dinner. It had a river flowing through it, along with a lake, and several houses. One even had a waterwheel! We went into the Green Dragon Pub for a feast.

After a bit of drinking ginger beer and talking, they opened up a set of curtains, and there where three tables, each with a massive feast laid out on them. The feast was great, with plates of delicious chicken, lamb and potatoes, and much more. There were vegetables and bread rolls laid out around the dishes. There was a fire in one corner, and sitting near it was a cat. The waiter explained that the cat’s name was pickle, and that when they where filming the Lord Of The Rings, they found Pickle on the set, eating the mice in the hobbit holes, and they decided to keep him. When we where done feasting, we walked back through the dark village, carrying lanterns. It was a night that I’ll never forget!

The Kittens of Costa Rica

In the place we are staying in Puerto Viejo, there are two little kittens. Their names are Cyber and Space, they are brother and sister, and both are ardorable. Cyber is a ginger male, that is slightly larger than Space, and is playful and fun. Space is a teensy little tortoiseshell, that is sleepy and sweet. They both enjoy exploring and playing with each other, and they often play in the bushes, and it is unusual for them to stray too far from the common space.

I like the kittens because they can fit in my hands, and they fall asleep in my lap. Sometimes when I am  watching something on my iPad they will chew on my headphones, (Which isn’t great) climb up on me to head butt me, or nip at my fingers when I wiggle them in front of them. I also like just looking at their tiny faces, and giving them kisses, or nuzzling them. I think it is cute that sometimes when I try to play with them, instead of nipping me, they start licking my finger, or when I scratch the side of their throat, and they seem to just close their eyes and go to sleep within seconds.

The kittens, however, are not the only animals here. There are also five dogs, and they are everywhere. At any given moment, there are at least two dogs in sight, and they often come to sit under the table that you sit at. They are all big, the smallest one being a black lab, and they wander away from the home, often walking with us to the corner store down the street. Two of the dogs are the brothers of a dog at the pizzeria next door; everyone’s related here they say. One day when we were in moneteverede, we saw the same dog at the bakery we went to every day when we were in town, four kilometers away. It was the same in Drake Bay. The animals here ar pretty lucky because it’s all very free range.

Biking Sucks.

The biking accident-

On September twenty fifth we were going on a so called “ Short, flat, thirty minute bike trip to a beautiful beach.” Sounds wonderful, right? Nope. Somehow, I found a way to mess it up. It started off great, renting the bikes smoothly, starting off with all of our beach items secure, but then I started getting pretty cramped. We biked for about fifteen minutes when I took one hand off the handles to massage the cramps. I ended up falling, slamming my entire body onto gravel. I had no helmet, but my bed was protected by my Shoulder. I massively bruised my upper thigh, right around the end of my shorts, and skinned and scraped my shoulder, knees, and even my hands and feet. To make matters worse, my bike chain fell off. None of us new how to fix a bike chain, so we were about to give up hope until…..

A man biking by saw and heard us, so he pulled over and repaired my chain, and oiled it too! At that point, I was up on my feet, since we had wiped the blood of everywhere, and I was feeling less shaky. I have slight anxiety, and was super nervous. The man was talking about the rest of the trip, and how we have to bike up a hill. Suddenly  I got very dizzy, and felt like puking. I sat down for a little more, and the man set off. I decided to walk my bike a little, and then when I felt ready to get on, I started riding again. I biked for about ten minutes when I got very anxious and started hyperventilating. Mom told us I could go to the shade  and relax for a little. I could switch bikes with her, and it was nice, but I got freaked out because I couldn’t brake or stand up, so the bike was wobbly. I stopped again in the shad, and mom decided to call  the company and ask if they could pick up our bikes. They were super nice, picked us up and the bikes to. They took us to the beach, which was beautiful.

The ocean was gentle, and I could finally BOB. It was so fun to bob. The waves in Costa Rica, are… welll rough. They are quite tall and powerful, and it was nice to just relax.  It was a white sand beach with gorgeous teal waves . Worth. It.

   The bruise was the worst.

Monkeys Everywhere! The Video

The crazy monkeys at Manuel Antonio. At this point, one had already hissed at me when I tried to get my bag away from him and then reached into the bag and ran off with our underwear. So, if I seem a little panicked- I was! there were so many of them!! and they were fearless! And they wanted our beach bag! (the kids, however, did not share my fear, as you will see)

The Monkeys of Manuel Antonio

After a nice beach day, we headed back to the car, but we saw a couple of tourists looking at two or three monkeys, so we looked around when we got to were they where, and there where probably a dozen or two monkeys. Daisy and I spent some time handing them leaves, watching them, and getting them to touch our hands. Suddenly, a monkey jumped near Mama and Daisy, because they had a tote bag, and it hissed, leapt at the tote bag, stole a shopping bag with our dry clothes in it, and ran off with it. The monkey scrambled up a tree, and then dropped it. We got it again, but we are lucky it didn’t run off with the bag. After that, they just hung out, randomly sprinted around at breakneck speed inches from our legs, and took the leaves we gave them. One once held Daisy’s hand with both of his, and one grabbed mine too.afetr a while, the monkeys gradually lost interest as they realized that we didn’t have any food, and we continued on our way.

The Two- Toed Pig Nose Sloth

The Two Toed Sloth is cute.

Very cute.

We are hiking in Monteverde with our guide Denis (he is the best) when he spots a two toed sloth. Two toed sloths are a less common then the tree toed sloth because the are nocturnal. This sloth was a mama, and we could see her little baby’s head sticking out. Two toed sloth baby’s stay with their mother for about a year ( 6 to 9 months) after being born. They also sleep for 23 hours. Everyday. I wanted to be a sloth until I found out about that..

Have you seen the video about the Sloth swimming online? Sloths can actually swim very well, and hold their breath for about forty minutes. Another fact is that their back legs are almost completed limp, so when they go to the ground to do their business, they have to drag themselves with their front legs. Did you know that “Sloth” means lazy? It is quite hard to describe the two toed sloth. It has a piggish nose, which surprisingly cute. Their face is a cream color, while the rest of their body is chestnut. The two toed sloths front legs have two claws on them. Their back legs have three claw toes on them. For the three toed sloth, it’s the opposite. Their front legs have three claw toes on them, and their back legs have two toes on them.

We spent probably a half an hour looking at the sloth, when her baby crawled out from under his mama’s arms and started scratching himself. I decided that he was a boy and I named him Muffin. Xander named his mom Roberta. It was quite random. They were very sleepy throughout the entire viewing, as they kept yawning. It was so cute. Oh so cute.

Look up two toed sloth for all its majestic goodness. The sloth we saw where Hoffman’s sloth. There are two species of the two toed sloth, Hoffman’s sloth and Linnaeus sloth. They look very simaler, Linnaeus is just fluffy.
